Shelter Collaborations Colorado State University has a shelter internship, a shelter residency, and a number of student opportunities in local shelters. The "Center" has interacted with these programs in many ways. Several of the shelter interns have evaluated diagnostic tests or treatments within shelters using funds from the "Center". The "Center" co-sponsors the shelter residency program with Nestle-Purina PetCare and the Dean's Office in the College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Our first shelter resident, Dr. Miranda Spindel, started a program to save shelter animals that were in need of advanced surgeries beyond the budget of participating shelters. This program was initially funded by PetSmart Charities (www.petsmartcharities.org/) and is also supported by the "Center." The Veterinary Teaching Hospital allows us to perform a number of different surgeries at a fraction of the normal cost because we are teaching young doctors (with veterinary student assistance) common procedures. The animals are then adopted by the participating shelters. To date, we have saved over 45 lives with this program. Please see the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education article published by Dr. Spindel and collaborators for a detailed description. We are actively seeking donations to continue this program. Please click on the donations icon if you can participate.
