Equine Reproduction

The Equine Theriogenology Service provides reproduction expertise at both the Equine Reproduction Laboratory (ERL) on the Foothills Campus and the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital.

A majority of reproduction cases are presented to the ERL. Services provided at the ERL include reproductive evaluations of mares, ultrasound pregnancy diagnosis, artificial insemination, embryo transfer, oocyte transfer, care of the pregnant mare, foaling of pregnant mares and care of the newborn foal. Services provided for stallions include stallion breeding management, semen collection and evaluation, preparation and shipment of cooled semen, and semen freezing. Additional advanced reproductive procedures, such as superovulation, embryo freezing, harvesting and freezing epididymal sperm, and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), are available upon request.

Services provided at the Teaching Hospital is primarily limited to diagnostic tests on mares with potential ovarian or uterine abnormalities, evaluations of selected medical problems of stallions and assistance with difficult births or dystocias. Reproduction expertise is also provided for mares housed at the VTH along with their foal that needs medical attention.
