The Equine Surgery and Lameness Service provides diagnostic and therapeutic expertise in equine lameness and surgery. Diagnostic capabilities with regards to lameness include the capability to perform in-depth lameness examinations, radiology, ultrasound, nuclear medicine, CT scans of lower limbs and neck, and MRI evaluation of the lower limbs. Other diagnostic capabilities include endoscopy of the upper airway and CT scans of the head.

A covered lameness examination area, an exercise arena, and a high-speed treadmill are also available for evaluating lameness and performance problems.

The service is staffed by faculty who are board certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, resident veterinarians in training for board certification in surgery, veterinary students, and a group of highly skilled technicians.

The equine surgery faculty members are known for their expertise in arthroscopic, orthopedic, soft tissue, laparoscopic, and reconstructive surgery. Minimally invasive surgical techniques include previously mentioned arthroscopy, laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, and laser surgery through flexible endoscopy. Lasers are also available for skin surgery.

In-house farrier services or consultation with your farrier is also available to provide corrective shoeing support.

The group receives scheduled outpatients as well as orthopedic surgical emergencies during regular hours. After hours a skilled group of Emergency and Critical Care faculty and residents receive emergencies.Our patients are monitored 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by a combination of veterinary students, skilled technicians, residents, and faculty.
