Biography: Dr. Orton received his DVM from Washington State University in 1978. He completed residency training in small animal surgery at Ohio State University in 1982 and was board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons in 1985. Dr. Orton joined the faculty of Colorado State University in 1983 as a small animal surgeon. He took a leave of absence from his faculty position to complete an NIH research fellowship at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and earned a PhD from CSU.  After returning to the faculty in 1988, Dr. Orton established the clinical cardiology service at CSU. Dr. Orton began an open heart surgery program for dogs in 1991. This program is credited with many firsts in the area of canine heart surgery and is recognized as the premier center for canine heart surgery in North America.  Dr. Orton heads an NIH-funded research program in the area of heart valve pathobiology and tissue engineering.
